Elf on the shelf: Harmless fun or messing with minds?

This year I decided to join the whole elf on the shelf craze. I have since been questioning whether it is fun, or if I am playing with big man's head. When I asked big man if he had made the Santa which was sitting by our elf he said yes. I know this was a lie as I had made the Santa. I couldn't tell big man that, so I congratulated him on what a great Santa it was. Then he looked at me and said "Well I think I made it, I can't remember" That is when I felt bad. I was messing with his head. He can't remember what he's done at school and now thinks he's making foam Santa's in his sleep! However, he seemed happy with finding our elf every morning so I have continued.
Then this morning I hear him shouting "Mummy, Mummy quick! Look at this! He has climbed the tree!"
"How did he get there I wonder?" I said.

The problem? I left him here deciding which Christmas CD to make.

I have come to the decision that one of 2 things has happened. Either our elf really is magic and does move around the house at night, or big man is playing me too! Tonight I shall go to bed and wake up really wondering where that elf has gone!

hmm.... i wondered about it as well. We have it and the story book and i actually like it, although my daughter had nightmares the first night as she was a little freaked out by the idea of him watching i think!! They are older i guess my lot and so can take it with a bit more of a pinch of salt. I think they do believe he goes back to santa tho!! lol

  2. That's actually quite a funny story about him not remembering if he had made a Santa, but as with all these things I guess it's just another 'game' to come clean about later in life. I got myself into all sorts of pickles, answering letters pretending to be an Elf. When my middle daughter found out she was so incredibly cross with me for lying! Hey ho, can't win them all! On another note - how did you get that snow on your picture?! Well jel!

It is a tricky one, throwing another 'magical' element into the mix. We like the fun of finding him each day. and are playing down the fact he's watching. Hope it's adding to the magic and not messing with their heads. Though, I see your elf actually has become truly magical, moving about - remarkable! Thanks for linking and sharing 'Elftakeover

Hmm! Well, maybe he really is magic! I have wondered about the merits of convincing our 7yo that there's a magic elf in the house - much as I want to retain the magic of Christmas I am also conscious of the playground. But, the boys are loving finding him, as is the wee girl... I'll worry about it again next Christmas! #ElfTakeover
